"By preventing even a vote on this bill, [Republics] prevented a raise for 28 million hardworking Americans."
"They said no to helping millions work their way out of poverty."
"They told Americans like the ones who are here today that you're on your own."

But—do companies only raise the wages of their employees when they are mandated by the government?
If I disagree that raising the minimum wage is the answer, am I
really saying no to helping people in poverty? Why do people have wages that are too low to survive on anyway?—what is the core source of the problem? and will raising wages by force, when this isn't happening naturally in the market, really help solve the source of that problem?
If the government doesn't help people, does that really mean they are on their own? Is the government the whole world? Are there not non-profit organizations? churches? human compassion?

On Tuesday, President Obama gave a shout-out to a Manhattan restaurant owner who, after thinking about the living expenses of her 10 employees, decided to raise their wages from $8/hour to $10/hour.
President Obama said her voluntary wage increase aligned with his minimum wage increase plan.
Actually they seem quite divergent to me.
In one case we're talking about an employer voluntarily raising wages of her employees, which she is allowed to do—at any time--considering circumstances of her business and her employees.
In President Obama's case, we're talking about government mandating that all employers raise the wages of their employees at minimum wage, regardless of the circumstances.
